Thailand Floods Response

Between Christmas and New Year, Southern Thailand was hit by the worst storms in more than 50 Years.

Areas that had never flooded were under 2m of water.

Local Rotary Clubs sprang into action assembling emergency food packages and in some cases, delivering by boat.

By the 3rd of January it was realised that that safe water was becoming a real issue and a request went out for help with SkyHydrants.

On 7th January DAA volunteers Brian Ashworth and Peter Elias were on their way with four SkyHydrant GEM Rapid Response Packs.

After meeting Disaster Aid Thailand members in Bangkok, the combined team reached Narathiwat, 1,000km South of Bangkok, on the 8th of January.

The DA Thailand members were vital to DAA’s response for their role in liaison, translation, as well as logistic support.

On arrival the team was met with a delivery of 10 tonnes of emergency food supplies, donated through contacts of Disaster Aid Malaysia and transported by Disaster Aid Thailand.

The first SkyHydrant installation started on the 9th of January, with all four being complete by the 12th January.

Two were installed in communities around Narathiwat, in conjunction with the Rotary Club; one sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mordialloc and the other by the Mary Mckillop Catholic College in Leongatha.

The other two were installed close to Yala in conjuction with Yala Rotary Club.

Again one was sponsored by the Rotary Club Mordialloc and the other from General donations.

Handover of the units was carried in conjunction with the distribution of the emergency food packs.
