The Pandemic Effect

With the COVID lockdowns over the past two years many of our supporting Rotary Clubs have been unable to hold fundraising events.

Individual donors are also likely to have been impacted

Although donations have dropped below the pre-COVID levels we have been consistantly surprised that our income has exceeded our expectations.

Planning For the Future

With the support we have received in the later half of the 2021-2022 financial year we are now moving to confidently plan for the future.

This will include further ‘Safe Water for Every Child’ installations and being able to respond to disasters with ‘Smart Aid’.

Sponsored SkyHydrant Opportunities

We currently have the following Safe Water Projects ready to go:

  • Beyond Bhutan 2020: Although the last units for the original project have been shipped we have identified many other schools and colleges in Bhutan that need safe water.
  • Bangsamoro Health and Peace: Supporting Barangays (villages) in an region of the Philippines that recently suffered from civil unrest.
  • Mindanao Safe Water: Protecting rural barangays on the Island of Mindanao, Philippines.

We are also looking for opportunities to develop a project in East Timor.

After a break, due to COVID, Disaster Aid Australia are again hosting visits to their office, near Dandenong.

You can get an insight of how we have continued to deliver aid in spite of the COVID Pandemic.

The Experience

Demonstrating the SkyHydrant

During the visit you will:

  • Find out how Disaster Aid Australia manages its fundraising;
  • Understand how overseas operations are managed;
  • See how volunteers are trained, with examples of the aid provided;
  • Watch dirty water being transformed into clean safe drinking water with a SkyHydrant;
  • Enjoy a two course meal (vegetarian option available);
  • Hear why we developed ‘Smart Aid’;
  • Watch a short video detailing our recent aid responses.

WASH Myths No 4 – Safe Water Is Just About Health

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimate than 80% of all illnesses in developing countries are caused by contaminated drinking water.

This makes the provision of safe water a major health improvement!

Over the time that Disaster Aid Australia have been working on our Safe Water for Every Child program we have found it impact other problems.

Here are some other issues where we have discovered safe drinking water has made a difference.

Education

Following the installation of a SkyHydrants absences due to illness have been seen to drop by 70% or more.

As a result:

  • Students studies are less disrupted.
  • Teachers have more time to teach rather than deal with children becoming sick during classes.

Poverty

With better health people in rural communities can do more work in their fields growing more crops with more produce to sell.

It also means that those who were paying a substantial part of their income to drink bottled water can now drink from the local water supply.

Plastic waste

With no need to buy bottled water we often get reports that bins that were previously overflowing with plastic bottles.

Now they rarely need emptying.

DAA, Back On The Road!

After two years of COVID pandemic lockdowns Disaster Aid Australia is now out and about again telling our story.

The Team before the rush.

Our first big event in 2022 has been the Rotary District 9820 Annual Conference in Taralgon.

The Rotary Showcase gave us the opportunity to make contact with existing supporters.

We were also again able to tell potential supporters about the aid we have continued to deliver over the last two years.

Additionally we were asked to make a presentation about the Bhutan 2020 project as part of the main programme.
