Training For Vanuatu

Disaster Aid Australia is currently supporting a project to help the villages of overseas workers from Vanuatu, working in Tasmania.

The project is led by Shellee Newell.

As part of our ‘Safe Water for Every Child’ program we are happy to support other humanitatian aid partners, in addition to the aid we directly supply.

In early August, Obed Seru, from Epule Village, spent a couple of days at our Office/Training Facility learing about how the SkyHydrant works.

Seru has now returned to Vanuatu and will be working on the installation of what we hope will be the first of many.

Barangay Tukanalipao

Recently our Philippine partner Balay Mindanaw installed a SkyHydrant at Barangay Tukanalipao in the Municipality of Mamasapano.

The SkyHydrant was sponsored by Lillian Stone, with additional support from Relief International.

Eight years ago the village became the site of a deadly clash that left 44 police commandos, 18 Moro fighters and five civilians dead.

Kaloy Manlupig of Balay Mindanw said, “It is the most emotional hand over… everyone was shedding tears of joy… everyone including all of us from Balay Mindanaw”

We all hope this improvement to the Barangay contributes to good health, a bright future and lasting peace, especially for the children.

Barangays Kinitaan & Rempes

Last Week, Balay Mindanaw installed, and signed over two SkyHydrants at two remote villages in Upi, Maguindanao in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao – Barangay Kinitaan and Barangay Rempes.

Both units have been sponsored by the Rotary Club of Dromana.

Located in the mountainous areas, there are rivers, springs and waterfalls that offer more than sufficient water.

The animals and people within the catchment however has meant that the water has been contaminated and the villagers health has been poor.

Balay Mindanaw first visited the villages 20 years ago to mediate a community peace consultations that produced a lasting ceasefire agreement .

Now the two villages are fulfilling their dream of providing safe drinking water, especially to their children.

A Peace Bridge

Earlier this week, our partner Balay Mindananw’s ‘DREAM Team’ installed a SkyHydrant in Barangay Tapodoc.

As with all installations the turn over ceremony included the signature of a formal agreement to ensure the Barangay understands their ongoing maintenance obligations.

This is a gift from the Rotary Clubs of Phillip Island & San Remo, Wonthaggi and Inverloch.

Water before treatment.

The installation of the SH was delayed several times including in December 2022 when entire populace left the Barangay due to violent conflict.

This Barangay is part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao where the Balay Mindanaw Community-Based Peacebuilding Team has been working for many years.

Toasting success with the Safe Water

We hope that the improvement to health that the SkyHydrant brings will serve as a bridge and inspiration for the stakeholders to continue building peace among them.
